Growing up amid Egypt’s vibrant musical traditions, percussionist Said El Artist absorbed the sounds of accordion, piano, and tabla that filled his childhood home, where his seven brothers also performed. His father, Hagy Abou, ranked among Alexandria’s most celebrated vocalists, which naturally steered the young musician toward a life on stage. By age ten Said had developed a deep attachment to the tabla—also called darbouka or dumbek—and soon began performing at local weddings and celebrations. Within a short time he collaborated with Alexandria’s leading musicians and dancers, and his rising profile in Cairo linked him to the country’s foremost dancers for engagements across the Middle East. Throughout his career he accompanied many of the Arab world’s most prominent pop stars and dancers, among them Nagua Fouad, Fifi Abdou, and Sahar Hamdy. Seeking to elevate the status of percussion instruments, he founded both a school of drumming and an ensemble devoted exclusively to percussion, presenting intricate compositions that highlighted each instrument’s distinct voice. The group expanded from fifteen members to nearly fifty, establishing itself as a fixture in Arab music. Said El Artist’s command and dedication first appeared on record with the 2005 release Belly Dancers Drummer; two years later came his follow-up album, Spectacular Rhythms.
