Canada's Sam Roberts crafts a melodic rock approach that merges the timeless singer/songwriter sensibilities of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon with the rhythm-driven Brit-pop sensibilities of Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, and the Stone Roses. Recognition arrived with his 2003 debut album We Were Born in a Flame, whose hit single "Brother Down" helped secure three Juno Awards, among them Album of the Year. He has stayed a consistent presence on the Canadian charts and awards circuit, earning five Top Ten albums, among them the 2008 Juno-winning Love at the End of the World, 2011's Collider, and 2016's Terraform.

Born in Quebec in 1974 to a family that had moved from South Africa, Roberts began on violin before turning to guitar. While devoted to music, he also completed his studies, receiving a B.A. in English from Montreal's McGill University in 1998. During this period he started the band Northstar and spent time living and recording in Los Angeles prior to the group's breakup.

After Northstar ended, Roberts came back to Canada and issued the 2002 EP The Inhuman Condition. Working with percussionist Jordon Zadorozny, the collection contained "Brother Down," a sinuous, groove-driven anthem blending folk and Brit-pop elements that drew interest from executives at MapleMusic Recordings, who offered him a deal. Both "Brother Down" and "Don't Walk Away Eileen" received substantial Canadian radio airplay, setting the stage for the 2003 full-length We Were Born in a Flame on Universal Music Canada. The album reached number two on the Canadian chart and claimed three Juno Awards: Album of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year.

Roberts followed with the 2006 sophomore release Chemical City, whose title reportedly alluded to the "Chemical Valley" nickname for an area in Sarnia, Ontario. Produced by Joseph Donovan, the classic-rock-leaning set climbed to number three on the album chart on the strength of the Canadian radio success "The Gate." In addition to an Album of the Year nomination, the single "Bridge to Nowhere" earned the Juno for Video of the Year. His third album, Love at the End of the World, appeared in May 2008 and entered the Canadian chart at number one, his first time at the summit; it also brought two further Juno wins for Artist of the Year and Rock Album of the Year.

On the Brian Deck-produced Collider in 2011, Roberts began recording under the Sam Roberts Band name. Alongside the single "I Feel You," the album included contributions from Land of Talk's Elizabeth Powell, Califone percussionist Ben Massarella, and Antibalas woodwind player Stuart Bogie. It reached number three in Canada and earned a Juno nomination for Album of the Year. In 2014 the Sam Roberts Band issued the '80s dance-rock-leaning Lo-Fantasy, which again landed at number three and received another Album of the Year Juno nomination.

Terraform, Roberts's sixth studio album, arrived in 2016. Recorded with Holy Fuck's Graham Walsh at the Tragically Hip's Bathouse Recording Studios in Kingston, Ontario, it featured the single "If You Want It" and peaked at number eight on the chart. He subsequently paused solo activity to join Sloan's Chris Murphy, Hollerado's Menno Versteeg, and Tokyo Police Club's Dave Monks in the supergroup Anyway Gang, whose self-titled debut appeared in 2019. Returning to Sam Roberts Band, he released All of Us in October 2020.
