Biography
Since the early 1990s Samara Lubelski has divided her efforts among stints in groups such as Hall of Fame, the Sonora Pine, and Tower Recordings, frequent appearances on violin and guitar alongside Fiery Furnaces, MV & EE, and White Magic, engineering sessions, participation in experimental ensembles, guitar duties in Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, and her own solo recordings that explore light psychedelia and acid folk.
Her first solo outing, Fleeting Skies, appeared on the Social Registry imprint in 2004. The following year brought another set of intimate, offbeat pop pieces titled Spectacular of Passages, and in 2007 Social Registry issued the similarly wide-ranging Parallel Suns. Throughout this period she remained a sought-after session player and engineer for Fiery Furnaces, MV & EE, White Magic, and Thurston Moore, a relationship that led her to Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! label for the 2009 release Future Slip. In 2012 she issued Wavelength on the De Stijl label. Shortly afterward she joined Chelsea Light Moving and contributed guitar to the band’s self-titled 2013 album.
She also formed a duo with noise guitarist Marcia Bassett and co-founded the experimental trio Augenmusik around the same time. A solo violin album, String Cycle, came out on Ultra Eczema in 2014, followed in 2016 by the baroque-pop record The Gilded Raid on Drawing Room. Lubelski maintained an active role in the New York City music community and continued working with Thurston Moore, appearing on his 2017 album Rock n Roll Consciousness and touring with his live band. That year Feeding Tube Records released Live NYC, her third collaboration with Bassett. Returning to solo work, she recorded Flickers at the Station with longtime associates Metabolismus at their German studio; Drawing Room issued the album in early 2018.
