Hailing from New York, the quintet Sanction fuses post-hardcore, metalcore, and deathcore into a raw, visceral outcry that earned acclaim for restoring heaviness to Long Island. The same five musicians—David Blom on vocals, guitarists Mike Marino and Andrew "Lumpy" Wojcik, bassist Nick LaGrega, and drummer Lil D—have remained unchanged since assembling in early 2015. Their music features detuned and heavily distorted guitar riffs, resonant drop-D bass lines, erratic yet rhythmically anchored percussion, and prominently foregrounded vocals that convey a deranged intensity.

With their 2015 self-titled two-song demo, Sanction distinguished themselves through an approach that emphasized greater musicality alongside unrelenting physical force compared with contemporaries. Although rooted initially in the metalcore of the nineties and early 2000s—particularly Zao, It Dies Today, and Martyr AD—their palette grew more refined by the time of the 2017 EP The Infringement of God's Plan, issued on Reconsider Records, which marked their emergence on the national stage and aligned them with established acts such as Eyes of the Dead, Suicide Silence, and All Shall Perish.

Pure Noise Records signed the band in 2018 and reissued The Infringement of God's Plan that same year as Sanction’s first full-length album. The release received favorable notices worldwide and opened doors to touring opportunities. In 2019 the label issued the advance singles “Paralysis” and “Radical Lacerations” ahead of the July arrival of the second album, Broken in Refraction, which coincided with the group’s United States concert dates.
