Harms Way formed in Chicago during 2006 as a side project launched by several participants in the straight-edge hardcore group Few and the Proud. Drummer Chris Mills, vocalist James Pligge (aka Hammers McPligue), bassist John Caution, and guitarists Bo Lueders, Jon Hofacker, and Jay Jancetic first pursued the brief, explosive powerviolence approach associated with early-nineties acts such as Crossed Out and Man Is the Bastard. Over the following years the lineup experienced various shifts while the musicians issued a handful of 7-inch singles and refined their approach through successive recordings on several different labels. Their debut full-length Reality Approaches appeared in 2009 and was followed by Isolation two years later.

With the 2013 Blinded EP the ensemble moved away from its earlier death-metal orientation toward a more industrial-inflected direction; the release also marked their introduction to Deathwish Inc., the imprint operated by Converge’s Jacob Bannon. Rust, the band’s third album, arrived in 2015. Harms Way then made its first appearance on Metal Blade Records with the 2018 album Posthuman, which included the track “Human Carrying Capacity.” On the 2023 fifth album Common Suffering the group delivered its most expansive and aggressive material to date, folding metalcore textures and an intensified rhythmic emphasis into a sound that had already absorbed elements of power metal and groove metal alongside its foundational hardcore roots.
