Biography
Sandro Russo, an Italian pianist, has concentrated on repertoire tied to the golden age of pianistic tradition, placing particular weight on the output of Franz Liszt. His relocation to the United States opened wider prospects and simultaneously led him to promote works by living composers. Born in San Giovanni Gemini in Sicily, he revealed precocious ability, entered the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory in Palermo, earned a summa cum laude diploma, and continued at the Royal College of Music in London. Multiple victories in international competitions followed, bringing appearances with the Sinfonica Siciliana and other European regional ensembles. In 2000 he relocated to America without securing an agent, an uncommon step that initially limited visibility until a 2002 concerto competition win sponsored by New Jersey’s Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra yielded engagements with U.S. orchestras. A further milestone occurred in 2008 when he performed on Franz Liszt’s 1863 Bechstein at its induction into the Bechstein Piano Center collection in New York; the instrument, silent in concert since Liszt’s death, anchored a nationwide tour later released on DVD. Russo subsequently concentrated on virtuoso literature, encompassing Liszt as well as scores by the composer-pianists Lowell Liebermann and Marc-André Hamelin. After issuing two recordings on the Musical Concepts label—one titled Scarlatti Recreated and devoted to tributes to Domenico Scarlatti—he joined the Steinway & Sons roster. His first release there, an album of Rachmaninov piano music, appeared in 2017 and was followed in 2018 by Images et Mirages: Hommage à Debussy.
