Biography
Known for her ability to fuse experimental drive with melodic pop instincts across synth pop, indie rock, and chamber folk, Sarah Jaffe has maintained this balance throughout her recorded output. Now based in Denton, Texas, she first drew notice for the austere folk leanings of her opening EP and the 2010 album Suburban Nature. After her folk-pop track “Clementine” appeared in the 2011 film Life Happens, she steered her music toward increasingly experimental pop on the 2012 release The Body Wins and the electronic-leaning Bad Baby that arrived five years later.
A lifelong Texan, Jaffe spent her formative years beyond Dallas and passed one year in Los Angeles before establishing herself in Denton’s active music community, where she entered the local indie circuit in the late 2000s with notable performances at the Austin City Limits festival and multiple honors at the Dallas Observer Music Awards. Strong reviews for her 2008 EP Even Born Again in both American and U.K. outlets, together with an international tour alongside Midlake, lifted her visibility and led to a contract with Kirtland Records, which issued Suburban Nature as her first official full-length in 2010. The self-recorded The Way Sound Leaves a Room EP followed in 2011, and later that year “Clementine” received prominent placement over the end credits of Life Happens, increasing her audience further.
Her direction moved deeper into experimental pop with the atmospheric 2012 album The Body Wins and its electro-pop successor Don’t Disconnect in 2014. Several months after that album’s release she issued the remix EP Visions, which included reworkings by Blue, the Misfit, Mystery Skulls, Symbolyc, and additional producers. On the 2017 LP Bad Baby she continued refining her bright synth- and electronic-centered approach, while the two 2019 EPs This Is Better Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 adopted a more sultry, soulful tone.
