Scanners, a London quartet devoted to dark pop, features vocalists and guitarists Sarah Daly and Matthew Mole together with guitarist and keyboardist Amina Bates and drummer Tom Hutt. Daly and Mole launched the project as a duo whose earliest performances relied on a drum machine, after which Bates, an early supporter, entered the fold. Hutt, who had recently relocated from the countryside to London before linking with the group, completed the configuration. Shared bills with the Fever, Electric Six, and Juliette Lewis & the Licks brought the band to Dim Mak, which offered a contract. The single "Lowlife" appeared in spring 2006 to preview the debut album Violence Is Golden, issued that summer. Scanners resurfaced in 2010 with Submarine, a more refined collection produced by Stephen Hague (New Order, Peter Gabriel, Siouxsie and the Banshees). Hutt exited in 2011 and Kilian took over on drums. A three-song EP in early 2013 signaled the arrival of the third album Love is Symmetry, released later that year.
