During the summer of 1992, Scratching Post formed in London, Ontario, navigating multiple personnel shifts before locking in their 1998 lineup of vocalist/guitarist Nicole Hughes, guitarist Mark Holman, drummer Jeff Depew, and bassist Phil Zeller. Their initial output arrived in 1995 as a self-titled EP pressed in a run of just 500 copies. After signing with Squirtgun Records in 1996, the band issued Flamethrower, which received an early 1999 reissue driven by sustained demand. Canadian college radio embraced their energetic power rock, while the group’s fusion of catchy pop hooks and aggressive metal cultivated a devoted audience. Frontwoman Nicole Hughes delivers a high-pitched girly voice that masks an in-your-face hard rock attitude, prompting comparisons to Chrissie Hynde, Juliana Hatfield, and Liz Phair. The band’s propulsive rhythm section, however, supplies the core intensity, which powered their 1999 album Destruction of the Universe. Recorded in Conshohocken, PA, the effort was produced by Rob Sanzo and mixed by illustrious producer Phil Nicolo.
