Biography
Charm and introspection define the sound of Sea of Bees, the folk-seasoned indie pop project fronted by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Julie Baenziger. Growing up in California's Central Valley, she began teaching herself guitar, piano, percussion, and additional instruments as a teenager. The project's first release, the 2009 EP Bee Eee Pee, was captured entirely by Baenziger herself during a single afternoon of recording. After inking a deal with Crossbill Records in the U.S., she delivered the full-length Songs for the Ravens in 2010; the critically well-received album included contributions from John Bee, Vetiver's Andy Cabic, and Grandaddy's James Neil, prompting a worldwide agreement with Heavenly (Universal Music Group). The 2011 EP Gnomes followed, featuring covers of Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" and U2's "With or Without You." Her second album, Orangefarben, emerged in 2012 on Heavenly and Team Love Records, once more spotlighting performances by Bee, Neil, and Rusty Miller among others. Issued in summer 2015 through 3 Loop Music, the contemplative but decidedly upbeat Build a Boat to the Sun was recorded with a complete band.
