Sean Khan, a composer, saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in London, gained his earliest reputation as a jazz artist heading the SK Radicals. In 2001 he delivered the first broken beat album, When Will We Belong?, on the Goya label, which positioned him among the pioneers of the city’s beat scene and opened doors to joint projects with Bugz in the Attic, Kaidi Tatham, and Mark De Clive-Lowe. After signing with Far Out Recordings in 2009, he unveiled his initial solo statement, Slow Burner, in 2011, marking his first comprehensive foray into jazz. Four years later came Muriel, an homage to his mother, which included vocal contributions from British neo-soul pioneer Omar along with Heidi Vogel and Sabrina Malheiros; the record later prompted remixes from Henry Wu, 4Hero, and Nicola Conte. Palmares appeared in 2018 to widespread international praise and showcased Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Paschoal on the majority of tracks, joined by Azymuth drummer Ivan “Mamao” Conti and percussionist Fabio Paschoal, while Vogel and Malheiros again supplied vocals. The set became a cult favorite whose singles received regular club play from Rio to Los Angeles to Bristol. In 2021 Khan issued his first release for BBE, Supreme Love: A Journey Through Coltrane, performed by an array of small to medium-sized ensembles whose arrangements incorporated strings, harp, and Vogel’s vocals. The album balanced Coltrane compositions with original pieces modeled on them, closing with two tracks remixed by Tatham.
