Biography
Vancouver-based composer Amir Abbey crafts dark, eerie minimalist drone under the name Secret Pyramid, drawing on tape loops, field recordings, guitars, and the elusive Ondes Martenot. His work recalls the space rock of Windy & Carl alongside Popol Vuh’s soundtrack contributions, yielding recordings that feel both immensely melancholy and lonely and at the same time soothing and comforting, striking a singular balance between the alien and the familiar. Born in Iran and resident in Canada since childhood, Abbey began issuing shoegaze-influenced drone music around 2010. After several CD-R and cassette editions drew notice within the underground experimental scene, Students of Decay issued Secret Pyramid’s Movements of Night in 2013. The following year brought a vinyl reissue of The Silent March—originally a 2011 cassette—together with a double-CD set pairing both albums. After additional limited cassette releases, Ba Da Bing put out Two Shadows Collide in 2017.
