Biography
The Seratones fuse R&B with rock & roll's raw drive and intensity, delivering performances marked by bold attitude, emotional depth, and fierce delivery. Established in Louisiana, the band centers on the commanding voice of A.J. Haynes, whose range stretches from intimate soulful tones to powerful, reverberating shouts that match the material's needs. Their debut full-length Get Gone, issued in 2016, positioned the sound midway between garage rock and classic blues-soul traditions while emphasizing high-octane vitality. For the follow-up Power in 2019, the group scaled back the guitar emphasis, incorporating funk grooves and refined studio techniques. Love & Algorithms from 2022 leaned further into classic funk and dance-music elements, incorporating vintage electronic keyboards more prominently.
Shreveport served as the birthplace for the Seratones, assembled by A.J. Haynes on vocals and guitar alongside guitarist Connor Davis and drummer Jesse Gabriel. The three had crossed paths frequently in the local music scene through gigs and fleeting group projects. Securing studio time at a regional facility prompted them to formalize as a unit. They recruited bassist Adam Davis, who hailed from Corvallis, Oregon, and chose the name Ceratones—derived from the Spanish term "cera" for wax, a nod to vinyl records—before shifting the spelling to Seratones to evoke serotonin, the body's mood-elevating compound.
Early momentum built through steady appearances on the Louisiana club circuit. A joint bill in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with the band Nerves proved pivotal when Nerves' vocalist, employed in Fat Possum Records' warehouse, alerted label head Matthew Johnson to the group. Impressed, Johnson offered a deal, leading to the May 2016 release of Get Gone on the imprint.
Several adjustments shaped the 2019 album Power on New West Records. Connor Davis exited, expanding the lineup to five members with Travis Stewart on guitar and Tyran Coker handling keyboards and guitar. The set reduced garage-rock edges in favor of stronger R&B and funk foundations. During sessions for Love & Algorithms in 2022, producer Paul Butler assisted the remaining core of A.J. Haynes, Travis Stewart, and Jesse Gabriel on instrumentation. The record amplified the prior album's direction, drawing from Giorgio Moroder for its polished textures and reliance on vintage electronic keyboards.
