S.G. Goodman

S.G. Goodman's gritty, weathered singing stands out immediately within a sound that shifts between blues-tinged roots rock and angular Americana. Her lyrics also emphasize vivid tales of rural existence, touching on the natural world, rooms marked by cigarette residue, and intense feelings. Those qualities surfaced throughout her 2020 debut Old Time Feeling, produced by Jim James, and carried into its 2022 successor Teeth Marks.

Raised largely in Hickman, Kentucky, as the daughter of farmers, Goodman took only a brief series of childhood voice lessons before rejecting conventional methods. She kept performing, however, during services at the local church. After moving to Murray for college, she joined the town's alternative circles and placed a track on the benefit collection Pine Mountain Music Sessions. Producer and singer/songwriter Daniel Martin Moore then shared her recordings with fellow Kentuckian Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Drawn to her work, James produced the full-length Old Time Feeling, which Verve Forecast released in mid-2020. Teeth Marks arrived on the same label in June 2022, its title evoking the lasting effects of emotional wounds.
