Biography
Skáld takes its name from the Old Norse term for poet. The French folk ensemble coalesced around a mutual fascination with Norse mythology and the region’s historic musical practices and gear. Through medieval instruments like lyres, talharpa, jouhikko, shamanic drums, and horns, together with chants, polyphonic and occasionally guttural vocals, and texts drawn from Norse runic sources, the collective revives Viking traditions for contemporary listeners.
French producer Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet, a recognized figure in the folk and medieval scenes, launched the project in 2017. Its core rests on the singular vocal and instrumental skills of Justine Galmiche, Pierrick Valence, and Mattjö Haussy. Drawing material from the epics La Völuspá and Gylfaginning—both preserved in the Edda, the umbrella title for a body of celebrated medieval Icelandic poems—the group delivered its atmospheric debut album, Vikings Chant, via Universal/Decca in 2019.
