Jacob Walter Lacey, who records and performs as Skyler Loyd, has followed a path of sonic exploration that gradually steered him toward expansive cinematic and ambient textures. From childhood he felt the wordless storytelling capacity of music and its capacity to stir feeling, prompting him to begin cello studies early on before adding violin and piano. These instruments opened the door to pieces that shift between brightness and shadow, shaped by the intense forces found in nature and in unvarnished human experience.

At sixteen he issued his debut release, the EP 5 AM, in June 2017, and has continued expanding his catalog without pause. By 2023 he had completed more than one hundred compositions that encompass joint projects, scores for film, and solo material. In 2020 he unveiled the intimate album The Earth Opened Wide, which examined his struggles with depression and his clinical diagnosis. Across his output he consistently channels unprocessed emotion, giving audible form to feelings that often resist description. His parallel work as an actor supplies an additional vantage point when scoring pictures, informed by time spent both before and behind the lens.

Storytelling through performance has always held strong appeal for him, and he sees acting and composition as mutually reinforcing pursuits. Respecting a director’s intent while navigating the layered demands of narrative remains central to both disciplines, whether the result is a film soundtrack or the embodiment of a character. In live settings and in the studio alike, his consistent goal is to craft moments that connect with listeners on a visceral, emotional plane.
