Slim Thug

With an imposing stature and a commanding vocal presence, Slim Thug, born Stayve Jerome Thomas, spent several years contributing guest verses to mixtapes and other artists' albums before issuing his first full-length project on the Neptunes' Star Trak imprint. Operating from northern Houston, the rapper aligned himself with Swishahouse's Michael Watts and quickly built a regional audience. Much of that momentum stemmed from his entrepreneurial approach, as he circulated mixtapes through his own Boss Hogg Outlawz label. He further expanded his interests by purchasing record stores and venturing into real estate. Already Platinum, released through Geffen after multiple postponements, reached stores in July 2005 and included production from the Neptunes and Jazze Pha. The Boss of All Bosses appeared in 2009, followed a year later by Tha Thug Show.

In 2012 Slim Thug launched the Thug Thursday mixtape series, whose second installment surfaced in 2014 and whose third part arrived in 2016. He also began the Welcome to Texas series, whose 2013 edition included Rick Ross, Pimp C, and Ludacris. That same year he collaborated with Lil' Keke on the joint album The Big Unit and delivered his fourth studio LP, Boss Life, which featured Big K.R.I.T., Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Bun B, Yo Gotti, and Kevin Gates.

Another productive period unfolded in 2015. Slim Thug initiated the Hogg Life series with The Beginning that February, followed by Still Surviving that summer and Hustler of the Year in October. A year later the fourth volume, American King, entered the Top Ten of the Billboard rap chart. 2017 proved especially eventful: the February release of the Welcome 2 Houston mixtape was followed in August by the collaborative album Havin Thangs 2K17 with Killa Kyleon. The World Is Yours, his third major project of the year, arrived in December and included appearances by Cam Wallace and Paul Wall. In 2019 Slim Thug teamed with Boston George for the mixtape Big Bad Boston and the Boss.
