International folk festivals have featured the ensemble repeatedly, alongside their extensive series of full-length recordings. Established in 1992 within Xalapa, the state capital of Veracruz, the group operates under guitarist Ramón Gutiérrez Hernández, who had earlier appeared alongside his brother in the son jarocho ensemble Mono Blanco before launching his own project. Their first full-length album arrived in 1998 as a self-titled effort on the Urtext Records imprint. Raíces appeared next in 2000 as an independent release. The third album, Las Orquestas del Día (2004), likewise emerged independently yet received a licensed reissue from the Moondo label in 2006. After an expanding schedule of worldwide folk festival appearances, Son de Madera issued Son de Mi Tierra (2009) through Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
