Todd Thomas came into the world on October 25, 1968, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, yet spent most of his childhood in Ripley, Tennessee. A 1987 relocation to Georgia brought him to the Art Institute of Atlanta, where he crossed paths with fellow student Tim Barnwell; the pair established the groundwork for Arrested Development’s formation the following year. Fronting the innovative alternative rap collective under the adopted name Speech, Thomas delivered verses steeped in optimism, social awareness, and spiritual depth that stood apart from the darker clichés then taking hold in gangsta rap, while the group’s sound merged hip-hop, soul, funk, and blues into a grounded, natural whole. The outfit’s 1992 debut, 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of..., ranked among that year’s strongest critical and commercial releases, driven by the singles “Tennessee” and “Everyday People,” collecting multiple Grammys and heading numerous end-of-year critic lists. Although 1994’s Zingalamaduni suffered the typical second-album setback, Speech ended the band to launch a solo path, issuing a self-titled album on Capitol in 1996; three years afterward, TVT released his first effort for the label, Hoopla. Time away from the spotlight let him become a father, reconnect with family, and reflect before readying new material. That break produced Spiritual People, an album carrying uplifting themes and a collective spirit that echoed his Arrested Development years. Vagabond arrived three years later.
