Spence Lee, a rapper of Chinese-Vietnamese descent raised in the United States, channels both his ancestral roots and American experiences through his songs. Born in Franklin Township, New Jersey, he grew up there after his mother escaped wartime Vietnam as a youngster and reached America, where she later encountered his Chinese father. Lee began rapping in 2008, yet prior to gaining traction in music he had focused on designing, producing, and wearing his own apparel. Initially guided by the late rapper Chino as Shotta Spence, he later adopted his given name Spence Lee to honor his relatives. An introduction to Mike WiLL Made-It led to a close artistic partnership that developed while styling Rae Sremmurd for the 2014 clip “Up Like Trump.” His earliest complete release, Upfall, appeared in 2016 and was succeeded by 1012 in 2019. Momentum built once he joined Mike WiLL Made-It’s Ear Drummer Records alongside 88Rising, which issued his first official album, S.H.O.T.T.A., in 2024.
