Biography
From Des Moines, Iowa, the little-known R&B outfit Split Decision Band issued just one single across its run. The local Network imprint released "Watchin' Out"/"Dazed" in 1978, its A-side delivering hard-charging disco-funk in the vein of Mass Production while the B-side offered a slower, sleazed-out funk pulse indebted to Ohio Players and Parliament. Collector demand for the lone 45 grew steadily across subsequent decades. BBE placed the A-side on its inaugural Soul Spectrum anthology in 1998, after which it surfaced on further obscure collections. Fresh 7-inch editions emerged separately in 2014 on Athens of the North and Now-Again. Seeking unreleased Split Decision Band material, the latter imprint located core member Gordon Starr Flipping, whose supplied archive proved sufficient for a self-titled album that appeared in 2017.
