Steriogram

Steriogram emerged from New Zealand as a cheeky counterpart to Sum 41, refining its eclectic mix of heavy-metal guitar grind, suburban hip-hop, and exaggerated funk antics in Auckland until the group achieved global recognition in 2004 through the low-culture anthem “White Trash.” Written three years earlier, the track’s video—centered on drummer Tyson Kennedy’s exuberant rapping—sparked widespread local attention. Although an earlier single had already earned modest notice, the strong reaction to “White Trash” convinced the band to elevate Kennedy to permanent frontman and MC while steering its energetic clamor toward greater hip-hop emphasis. Kennedy joined forces with guitarist/vocalist Brad Carter, bassist Jake Adams, and guitarist Tim Youngson, who then invited drummer Jared Wrennall into the lineup; the resulting momentum secured higher-profile shows. Capitol Records responded by signing Steriogram in late 2002. David Kahne, previously associated with Sublime and Sugar Ray, produced the sessions, and the resulting Schmack! LP reached New Zealand listeners in May 2004, showcasing a massive, radio-friendly sound packed with loopy humor.
