Biography
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys ascended rapidly within Cajun music, earning recognition across festival and club stages on par with Beausoleil. The group’s Cajun rhythms and melodies, styled in a ’90s vein, connected immediately with listeners throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Performing exclusively in French underscores their dedication to safeguarding the Cajun tradition as it exists in southwest Louisiana. Riley manages accordion, songwriting, and vocals yet collaborates on material with band members David Greely on fiddle, Peter Schwarz on bass, fiddle, and harmony vocals, Kevin Dugas on drums, and Jimmy Domengeaux on guitar. Early recordings display deep regard for tradition through numerous covers of both prominent and lesser-known Cajun songs, whereas later releases—particularly 1995’s La Toussaint—illustrate the band’s maturation as a self-directed touring unit, evident in a larger share of original compositions. Based in Lafayette, Riley began accordion at age 13, completed a three-year apprenticeship on the instrument in the band of fiddle-playing Cajun legend Dewey Balfa, and started his own ensemble at 18. Rounder Records has issued every Mamou Playboys album. The 1994 live set Live! incorporates two zydeco pieces by Clifton Chenier yet centers on traditional Cajun repertoire by Dewey Balfa, Iry Lejeune, D.L. Menard, and Aldus Rogers. Trace of Time from 1993, produced by Beausoleil’s Al Tharp, presents standard Cajun material with striking clarity, while 1992’s Tit Galop Pour Mamou emphasizes acoustic, folk-leaning selections. The self-titled 1990 debut, produced by Cajun blues-rocker Zachary Richard, likewise honors earlier sources by featuring compositions from the same Cajun masters. Bayou Ruler arrived in 1998, followed by Happytown—produced by C.C. Adcock—in 2001. Bon Rêve appeared in 2003, and Dominos followed in 2005.
