Steve Smyth, an Australian singer and songwriter, fuses diverse influences into an earthy, soulful style that echoes the barroom grit associated with Tom Waits and the wistful melancholia of Jeff Buckley. Growing up as the child of two ministers while traveling across the country, Smyth found himself immersed in music from an early age. Picking up the guitar young, he began performing both solo and with bands during his teenage years, absorbing a blend of folk artists like Lead Belly and Dave Van Ronk alongside rock acts such as Radiohead and Nirvana. His first album, titled Release, came out in 2011, prompting him to explore Europe in pursuit of his wanderlust through tours, jobs, and composing material for the next project. Having inked a deal with the Australian independent label Ivy League Records, Smyth headed to Los Angeles to lay down tracks for his sophomore effort alongside an experienced rhythm section that included drummer Joey Waronker, known for his work with Beck and Atoms for Peace, and bassist Gus Seyffert, who has collaborated with Norah Jones and the Black Keys. Summer 2014 saw the release of that album, Exits.
