Biography
SubArachnoid Space, the neo-psychedelic improvisational unit, came together in San Francisco during the closing months of 1995. Its founding trio consisted of guitarist Mason Jones, bassist Jason Stein, and drummer Michelle Schreibner. The group issued its first recording, the single “Char-Broiled Wonderland,” in the opening weeks of 1996, after which second guitarist Melynda Jackson joined the lineup. Later that same year the quartet delivered the full-length Delicate Membrane, followed in early 1997 by Ether Or. Once Almost Invisible appeared later in 1997, Stein departed and Andey Stephens assumed the bass chair. Endless Renovation arrived in 1998, after which the band returned with Sleeping Sickness in 1999 and released These Things Take Time in autumn 2000. Over the remainder of the decade the ensemble’s recorded work steadily grew heavier in tone. Although releases became less frequent, Also Rising surfaced in 2003 and The Red Veil followed in 2005. When Eight Bells was tracked in 2009, the lineup comprised Jackson, bassist Daniel Barone, drummer Lauren K. Newman, and guitarist Daniel Osborne.
