Originating in Portland, Oregon, the psych-rocking space travelers Eternal Tapestry were established by Nick Bindeman of Jackie-O Motherfucker and Dewey Mahood of Plankton Wat, whose partnership coalesced around a mutual devotion to the music of Neu! and guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Nick’s brother Jed, affiliated with Heavy Winged and Jackie-O Motherfucker, entered the lineup in 2006. The resulting trio issued recordings across LPs, CDs, EPs, and cassettes, among them Vibrations, New Dawn, Mystic Induction, and Altar of Grass—all appearing in 2007—plus Declining Star and Sea of Silk in 2008. Ryan Carlile joined on saxophone and synth the following year, after which the group released The Invisible Landscape, Palace of the Night Skies, The Hidden Revealed (cassette only), and the live CD-R Spring Tour. Bassist Krag Likins came aboard in 2010, enabling the ensemble to refine its sound while maintaining an active touring schedule that year. Side projects flourished concurrently: Mahood delivered the blissed-out space dub album Edibles under the Plankton Wat name, while he and Jed joined forces with Barn Owl members to record Black Summit as Garden Sound. Heavy Winged also put out Sunspotted and Fields Within Fields in 2010. The band signed with Chicago’s Thrill Jockey that year to document its first album as a quintet, Beyond the 4th Door, issued in early 2011 and followed that July by the collaborative long-player Night Gallery with Sun Araw. Dawn in Two Dimensions appeared in June 2012, with World Out of Time arriving in November. Over the next two years the group continued issuing limited-edition items—short-run cassettes including a split with the California dream-tropicalia duo Mondo Lava, tour-only CD-Rs, and the extremely restricted vinyl-only Guru Overload, proceeds from which benefited a foundation devoted to preserving the Borneo Orangutan. Amid these lower-profile efforts, the musicians spent extended time in a remote cabin in Zigzag, Oregon, laying down tracks for the expansive 2015 double album Wild Strawberries, again released on Thrill Jockey.
