Biography
Czech Republic-based rock band Support Lesbiens drew both praise and criticism for delivering their material in English while crafting a hard rock approach shaped amid the global rise of alternative rock in 1992. Although their debut full-length, Medicine Man from 1994, found an audience, widespread hesitation among Czech buyers of pop music toward domestic acts performing in a foreign tongue prevented the group from attaining genuine superstar standing. The band continued forward with the 2001 album Regeneration followed by Tune da Radio in 2002, gradually strengthening their foothold in Czech affections until the 2004 release Midlife allowed them to accomplish a feat previously unmatched by any other Czech act. The single "Cliche" from that album became the first number one single achieved by a Czech band singing in English, confirming Support Lesbiens among the nation’s foremost acts. A change in direction followed when lead guitarist Jaromir Helesic, the foundation of the band’s earlier rougher rock sound, departed. Support Lesbiens persisted under flamboyant frontman Krystof Michal alongside guitarists Hynek Toman and René Rypar, bassist Jan Daliba, and drummer Tomás Novák, issuing Euphony and Other Adventures in 2006. Their subsequent full-length, the 1993-2007 retrospective Greatest Hits, moved briskly and reached the Top Ten on the Czech Republic’s album chart.
