The band Sweet Water, based in Seattle, Washington, launched its activities precisely when the city’s early-1990s musical upheaval was gaining force. Its inaugural concert shared the bill with another act making its own debut, the group then called Mookie Blaylock and later known as Pearl Jam.

Sweet Water sustained its operations through the final stretch of the alternative-rock era until a hiatus took hold in 1999. Previously operating as S.G.M., the quartet benefited from heightened attention toward Pacific Northwest music and obtained a contract with Atlantic in 1992.

Its self-titled album, which followed the 1990 independent release Ter, enjoyed moderate sales yet fell short of the commercial impact achieved by Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. The band kept its profile intact by touring with Alice in Chains and Candlebox while also signing with Elektra’s East West label, which issued the third album Superfriends in 1995.

As boy bands and vapid dance-pop supplanted alternative rock’s momentum late in the decade, Sweet Water effectively disbanded after releasing Suicide in 1999. Following more than six years of inactivity, the group reassembled in 2007 to perform live and develop new material.

In 2009, Adam Czeisler on vocals, Rich Credo on guitar, Cole Peterson on bass, and Paul Uhlir on drums returned with the album Clear the Tarmac and a full slate of shows that included the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.
