Biography
Although often likened in alternative circles to the broadly accessible garage and arena rock of Pearl Jam following Ten, Seven Mary Three maintain that their determination to stay connected with the wider world distinguishes them from such peers. Their material instead explores personal awakening and authentic outsiders cut off from mainstream society. Formed by musicians who met while attending the College of William and Mary in Virginia, the group secured a deal with Mammoth after issuing the self-produced Churn in 1994. That release, driven especially by its raw opening single “Cumbersome,” stirred notable interest throughout Florida, prompting Orlando stations to grant the band extensive airplay. Seven Mary Three then moved to the Orlando region, revisited their earlier material, and added two fresh tracks, completing the official debut American Standard in 1995. Powered by the national traction of “Cumbersome,” the album attained platinum status and earned the band a contract with Atlantic Records. Rock Crown arrived in 1997, followed a year later by the third album, Orange Ave. Though neither matched the commercial profile of American Standard, the group sustained its output through the next decade, delivering The Economy of Sound in 2001 and Dis/Location three years afterward. In late 2007 Seven Mary Three aligned with New York’s Icon Records, resulting in the sixth album, DAY&NIGHTDRIVING.
