Formed in Oklahoma City during the post-grunge period, the Nixons distinguished themselves through direct, fervent songwriting under the guidance of singer/guitarist Zac Maloy, guitarist Jesse Davis, bassist Ricky Brooks, and drummer Tye Robinson. Dragon Street Records issued the band’s first EP, Six, in 1992; John Humphrey then took over drums ahead of the 1994 Rainmaker release Halo. Several tracks from that set later appeared on the group’s MCA debut, Foma, which arrived in 1995. The album yielded the radio success “Sister,” prompting extensive road work that included shows alongside Soul Asylum. In 1997 the lineup shifted again when Ricky Wolking replaced Brooks, resulting in a self-titled follow-up. Although that record did not equal Foma’s commercial performance and MCA dropped the band, relentless live dates sustained a devoted following that embraced the 1999 Scrapbook EP—issued once more on Rainmaker—as well as the Koch release The Latest Thing in early 2000.
