Takfarinas

Takfarinas entered the world shortly before Algeria’s rai revolution, in a Kabyle-majority district on the outskirts of Algiers. Radio broadcasts exposed him to Arabian, Algerian, French, Spanish, and English material, yet his core sensibility remained rooted in local traditions while absorbing passing inflections from Stevie Wonder and Edith Piaf. With his father’s encouragement he first practiced on improvised guitars, later graduating to a proper instrument, and soon entered the studio, issuing his debut single in Algiers, his first album in Paris, and forming his initial ensemble shortly afterward.

Following two recordings with the group Agraw, he resumed a solo career, blending Berber and Andalusian rhythms with established Kabyle song structures to create a fresh regional hybrid. During this period he also refitted an older mandole with an additional neck and extra strings, among other alterations, thereby isolating masculine and feminine registers; he continues to favor a comparable electric version of the instrument.

In 1979, like numerous fellow artists, he left Algeria for France to escape the prevailing dictatorship. Subsequent releases and capacity crowds at venues in both Paris and Algiers ensued, culminating in the international release of the 2000 album Yal on Tinder. Takfarinas maintains an active schedule of performances and new recordings.
