Talk in Tongues emerged as a Los Angeles quartet when local musicians McCoy Kirgo and Garrett Zeile on vocals and guitar joined forces with bassist Waylon Rector and drummer Bryan DeLeon, both formerly of Kitten and all previously scattered across other projects. Their sound merged psych-rock foundations inside dream-pop layers while drawing primary inspiration from 1960s psychedelia and 1990s shoegaze. The group issued its debut single “Still Don’t Seem to Care” in 2014, mere weeks after the first rehearsal. Once Claudius Mittendorfer—credited on releases by Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Marr—completed the mix, Fairfax Recordings offered the band a deal, allowing them to finish tracking their debut album before summer ended. Kevin Augunas, whose credits include Needtobreathe and Valerie June, produced the resulting album Alone with a Friend, which appeared in spring 2015.
