Born in the USA, Tami Lynn numbered among multiple artists rooted in New Orleans, Louisiana, who contributed to Harold Battiste’s AFO (All For One) label in the early 1960s. She lent her voice to the album A Compendium, which spotlighted the co-operative’s crack houseband, yet that chapter ended abruptly once the enterprise collapsed. Her signature 45, the powerful Bert Berns composition ‘I’m Gonna Run Away From You’, first appeared in 1967. Though it made no impression stateside, the track scored a delayed UK success in 1971, peaking at number 4; its standing was reaffirmed when the single re-entered the Top 40 four years afterward. Lynn kept releasing material in the interim, yet that standout performance endures as her defining achievement.
