The massive popularity of "Cannonball" and Last Splash took the Breeders by surprise and triggered their rapid burnout. In 1994 singer/songwriter/guitarist Kim Deal launched the Amps so she could issue new songs while her main band paused. Joined by the Breeders’ drummer Jim MacPherson, she recruited Dayton, OH musicians Nathan Farley and Luis Lerma of the Tasties. Originally billed as Tammy & the Amps, the group delivered a rougher, rawer version of the Breeders’ skewed pop. The Tipp City EP preceded Pacer, the band’s first and only album, issued in late 1995. That year the Amps toured with Helium and Sonic Youth. In 1996 Deal merged the Amps lineup into a reconstituted Breeders that also included Pod-era member Carrie Bradley for several California shows with Primus. As the Breeders’ famously unstable roster continued to shift, every former Amp departed within two years.
