Biography
In late 1993 the Queercore revolutionaries Team Dresch assembled in Portland, Oregon. Bassist Donna Dresch, whose résumé already included stints from Dangermouse through Dinosaur Jr., joined singer/guitarist Jody Bleyle of Hazel, singer/guitarist Kaia Wilson formerly of Adickdid, and Scott Plouf, then the drummer for the Spinanes. Their debut performance took place on New Year’s Day 1994, still unnamed; after weighing options such as Magic Animal and Dyke Access Road, the quartet settled on Team Dresch. Once they tracked the Kill Rock Stars single “Hand Grenade,” Plouf departed, and a rotating cast of short-term drummers filled the seat until ex-Calamity Jane percussionist Marci Martinez joined permanently.
Issued jointly on Dresch’s Chainsaw imprint and Bleyle’s Candy-Ass label, 1995’s Personal Best delivered a brilliantly visceral fusion of punk-pop energy and lesbian empowerment. Martinez exited after the album’s completion, prompting the arrival of former Vitapup drummer Melissa York in time for 1996’s Captain My Captain. Following Kaia’s self-titled solo LP, she stepped away, leaving Dresch, Bleyle, Martinez, and new guitarist Amanda Kelly to issue the Outpunk single “Deattached” under the name New Team Dresch v.6.0 Beta.
