Biography
Emerging in New York during 1992, Free Kitten gave Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore's Julia Cafritz an outlet for projects separate from their main bands. Cafritz on guitar and Gordon on bass took to the stage with concise post-punk performances. Later that year the duo issued the single Call Now/Straight Up before joining the Lollapalooza tour. Their output featured a version of X-Ray Spex's "Oh Bondage, Up Yours." Yoshimi of the Boredoms entered the lineup in 1993, supplying harmonica, trumpet, drums, and occasional vocals. Bassist Mark Ibold from Pavement signed on the following year. The band's debut album Nice Ass appeared in 1995, succeeded by Sentimental Education in 1997, the same year Gordon introduced her clothing line X-Girl. Gordon then pursued additional work through the late 1990s and into the 2000s, including a solo album, a Calvin Klein modeling campaign, and art exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and Japan. Cafritz meanwhile withdrew from music, with reports indicating she had married, started a family, and become a teacher. Nearly eleven years afterward, Gordon and Cafritz reunited to record the album Inherit.
