Biography
Bratmobile joined forces with Bikini Kill to ignite the riot grrrl movement during the early years of the 1990s. By challenging the entrenched male control in punk rock circles, they paved the way for greater involvement from women in music both on stage and in the audience. The lineup featured vocalist Allison Wolfe, guitarist Erin Smith, and drummer Molly Neuman. Their first performance occurred at the International Pop Underground convention held in 1991, an influential gathering of independent artists organized in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, who led Beat Happening and headed K Records. Despite the challenges of coordinating recordings across California, Washington, and Maryland, which complicated the process of producing tracks, the group issued several singles before delivering their full-length album Pottymouth in 1993. The Real Janelle EP from 1994 marked the end of their original recording sessions, though a BBC session recorded in July 1993 appeared the next year under the title The Peel Session EP. Following the band's breakup, Neuman became part of the Peechees, and Wolfe along with Smith formed Cold Cold Hearts. In March 1999, Bratmobile reunited for shows supporting Sleater-Kinney, and they put out Ladies, Women, and Girls in the autumn of 2000.
