In 1992 Sacramento, California became home to Tiger Trap, a short-lived indie-pop group that nevertheless ranked among the decade’s most cherished acts. Singers and guitarists Rose Melberg and Angela Loy, already schoolmates, launched the project and promptly enlisted bassist Jen Braun and drummer Heather Dunn; the quartet took its name from a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. Within weeks the band issued its debut single, “Words and Smiles,” a split release with Bratmobile on the Four Letter Words label. Moving to K, Tiger Trap next offered the “Supercrush” single, then delivered its self-titled debut LP in 1993. The album quickly became a favorite in underground circles, its sharp melodies, graceful harmonies, and bittersweet lyrics resonating widely. After one further EP, Sour Grass, the group dissolved following a December 1993 performance in San Francisco, though several compilation tracks surfaced later. Rose Melberg proved the most active alumnus, recording as half of the Softies and also with Go Sailor! and Gaze, while Heather Dunn frequently supplied drums for Lois.
