Biography
Hailing from the Oxford, England pop milieu that also produced Radiohead and Supergrass, the Candyskins came together in 1989 when frontman Nick Cope assembled guitarist brother Mark, lead guitarist Nick Burton, bassist Karl Shale, and drummer John Halliday. Their first release, the UK hit single "Submarine Song," quickly led to a Geffen contract, and the label put out the band's debut album The Space I'm In in 1990. The follow-up, Fun?, arrived in 1993, yet the major-label period proved largely unfruitful; two years afterward the group moved to the British imprint Ultimate. A domestic breakthrough came with the single "Monday Morning," prompting the 1997 comeback album Sunday Morning Fever. The next year saw Death of a Minor TV Celebrity, which featured new bassist Brett Gordon on the recordings.
