Biography
In 2008 the talents of Alex Davey Saunders, Daniel Hopewell, George Waite, and Russell Bates converged to launch the Crookes, British indie rockers whose sly, romantically doomed modern pop songs have invited comparisons with Vampire Weekend, Belle and Sebastian, the Housemartins, and the Smiths. Taking their name from the Sheffield suburb where Saunders and Hopewell first met, the group drew national notice in 2009 after taping a live session for BBC Radio 1—an appearance that led influential disc jockey Steve Lamacq to name them his favorite British band of the year.
