Biography
Emerging from America's indie rock underground during the early 1980s, the Cucumbers centered on the duo of Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes, both of whom handled vocals and guitar, and they displayed a clear fondness for catchy jangle pop paired with themes of romantic doubt. An EP issued on the Fake Doom label in 1983 preceded their debut album, Who Betrays Me...And Other Happier Songs, which appeared two years later. The self-titled LP from 1987 signaled a shift toward greater maturity, one that did not align especially well with the group's original appeal, and the band stayed quiet for more than seven years before issuing Where We Sleep Tonight in 1994.
