Biography
Formed in 2004, the Ettes delivered a charged blend of pop intelligence and raw garage-rock drive through the work of vocalist and guitarist Lindsay "Coco" Hames, drummer Maria "Poni" Silver, and bassist Jeremy "Jem" Cohen, three transplants who left New York for Los Angeles. Early supporters responded to the group’s fusion of Nancy Sinatra’s cool, Patsy Cline’s country inflection, and the Rolling Stones’ swagger, a sound amplified by radio exposure and energetic performances that prompted Sympathy for the Record Industry to offer a deal. The label issued the Dead and Gone single, the split From the Songbook of Greg Cartwright shared with the Fondas, and the full-length debut Shake the Dust, which the trio captured in London under producer Liam Watson.
Returning to the same studio and engineer for the next effort, the band delivered Look at Life Again Soon, released by Take Root in September 2008. One year afterward came Do You Want Power, tracked at Nashville’s Bomb Shelter under Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright. During those sessions Hames and Cartwright began writing together; what started as plans for a lone single grew into the album Strychnine Dandelion, issued by In the Red in 2010. By then the Ettes had relocated to Nashville and were developing fresh material, composing further while touring as support for Kings of Leon and the Dead Weather. They later rejoined Liam Watson at his Toe Rag Studio in London to record their fourth album, Wicked Will, which appeared in 2011.
Once the subsequent touring cycle ended, the band issued the 2012 single “Teeth” and shifted focus. Together with friends they secured a Nashville storefront and launched Fond Object, a combined record shop and art space that opened its doors in April 2013. Within a few years the operation expanded into a label of the same name, whose inaugural project was a 2016 tenth-anniversary reissue of Shake the Dust augmented by two previously unreleased tracks. In the midst of these activities Hames joined the New Pornographers for their 2014 road dates and began writing her debut solo album.
