Biography
The Fireflies issued eight singles across five different labels between 1958 and 1967. Brooklyn served as the site of their 1957 formation, after which frequent personnel shifts occurred and left the precise roster details unclear. Ritchie Adams, born Richard Ziegler, handled lead vocals and guitar in the initial configuration alongside Lee Reynolds on bass and vocals, Paul Giacalone, also known as Paul DeMaya, on drums and vocals, and John Viscelli on saxophone and vocals.
Giacalone supplied the songwriting for the group’s major success, their second release “You Were Mine” on Ribbon in 1959, where Adams took the lead vocal part and Gerry Granahan contributed backing vocals. The romantic ballad approached but did not reach the pop Top 20 and prompted an answer song, “I Was Yours,” from the Paulette Sisters that Wayne Thomas later rerecorded. Ribbon, the New York imprint belonging to Alan Kallman, issued Giacalone’s “I Can't Say Goodbye” at the start of 1960, yet the track advanced only to the lower edge of the Top 100. Additional Ribbon sides appeared, among them “Marianne,” which Canadian American Records put out in 1960 while the label simultaneously offered “My Girl” as its final Fireflies release.
Adams appears to have departed in pursuit of solo performing and songwriting opportunities before the band placed its first Taurus Records single in 1962. That Taurus debut reworked the earlier hit as “You Were Mine for Awhile,” after which “Blacksmith Blues” surfaced on Hamilton and three further titles followed on Taurus. Adams subsequently recorded solo 45s for Beltone, Congress, Imperial, and additional imprints, authoring most of those performances himself, an activity he had not undertaken while with the Fireflies, although none registered strongly on the charts.
His songwriting compensated for this shortfall, yielding close to 375 compositions and two major successes with “Tossin' and Turnin'” and, years afterward, “After the Lovin'.” He supplied material to the Banana Splits and the Archies and also performed the lead on the sole Archies single lacking Ron Dante, “Love Is Living in You.”
