Biography
A studio ensemble called The Five Blobs was formed under the direction of session musician Bernie Nee specifically to cut the title track “The Blob,” written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David—the latter being the brother of Hal David, who would later forge a long-running partnership with Bacharach. This sax-led dance track, modeled on the Champs’ “Tequila,” was created for the 1958 motion picture The Blob, which featured Steve McQueen, Aneta Corseaut, Earl Rowe, and Robert Fields. Issued by Columbia Records, the single climbed into the national Top 40 and reached the Top Ten in Los Angeles.
