The Flesh was fronted by guitarist and vocalist Nicholas Halpern, also known as Nathan Halpern, with the New York City quartet completed by keyboardist Gabriella Zappia, bassist Jason Binnick, and drummer Greg Rogove. Their sound centered on slithering art punk laced with dance beats, a style that emerged as a notable indie rock movement in the early 2000s following the breakthroughs of the Rapture and the Fever. The group debuted on Kanine with the Death Connection EP in July 2003, then switched to Gern Blandsten for the Sweet Defeat EP, which arrived almost exactly twelve months afterward. Those well-received efforts, paired with growing word-of-mouth about the band’s sweaty live shows, generated anticipation for the Flesh’s self-titled full-length, issued by Gern Blandsten in October 2004. Over the next two years the quartet shared stages with Hot Hot Heat, Death from Above 1979, Radio 4, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Man Man, and additional acts. The touring momentum carried forward to the April 2007 arrival of their second album, Firetower, which introduced new drummer Peter Angevine.
