Biography
The Harlem Gospel Travelers craft material steeped in the soulful and faintly cosmic textures of 1960s gospel funk ensembles. Formed under the direction of longtime producer and industry figure Eli "Paperboy" Reed, the ensemble emerged from a nonprofit initiative. Four gifted singers enrolled in the Gospel for Teens program first connected with Reed before joining him in co-writing original material. Their affinity for earlier eras shaped the period-appropriate sonics of the 2019 debut album He's on Time, a sensibility the group further developed across later projects such as the 2024 release Rhapsody.
The New York-based gospel singers Asher Bethune, Ifedayo Gatling, George Marage, and Stephen Pedley had already spent multiple years in Vy Higginsen's Gospel for Teens music-education program by the time Reed joined its staff in 2014. His role quickly evolved from classroom instructor to mentor and ultimately creative partner once the Harlem Gospel Travelers initiative crystallized. While the quartet composed pieces modeled on the classic gospel-soul acts that had long inspired them, Reed assembled an accompanying ensemble and arranged studio time. Those sessions first yielded a limited-edition 7" single in 2018 and then the radiant, exuberant full-length He's on Time the following year. After the debut, the lineup contracted to a trio comprising Marage, Gatling, and newcomer Dennis Bailey. This configuration of the group recorded the 2022 album Look Up!. Additional singles appeared thereafter, and the 2024 album Rhapsody saw the members more explicitly address their queer identities alongside the tensions those identities created within longstanding gospel conventions.
