Biography
Swirling guitars, ethereal vocals, and understated electronic elements define the High Violets' serene and gently rhythmic approach to early-1990s dream pop. Following the 1998 dissolution of Bella Low, a staple in Portland, Oregon's psychedelic indie rock community, the High Violets came together. Clint Sargent on guitar and vocals, Violet Bianca Grace handling bass and vocals, along with drummer Luke Strahota, initiated performances under the High Violets name; however, Allen Davis, previously with Echoplex, soon took over bass duties from Grace. Subsequently, classically trained violinist Kaitlyn ni Donovan assumed lead vocal responsibilities while also adding guitar, strings, and keyboards to the mix. In 1999, the band issued their self-released EP titled Dream Away. Having inked a deal with Ireland's Reverb Records, their first full-length effort, 44 Down, was released in 2002. Four years afterward, they resurfaced with To Where You Are, introducing new bassist Aaron Overstreet. To promote the record, the High Violets embarked on a tour throughout the United States, with appearances at South by Southwest and Musicfest NW. 2007 saw the release of Satellite Remixes, which incorporated a remix by electro-shoegazer Ulrich Schnauss. Bassist Colin Sheridan came aboard prior to the band's fourth album, Cinéma, issued via Comet Rock Records in 2010. Starting in 2012, tracks from the group featured on various editions of Saint Marie Records' Static Waves compilations. Their fifth studio album, Heroes & Halos, came out on the same label in 2016.
