Positioned between the conventional leanings of many rockabilly revival groups and the edgier, more spectral atmosphere of psychobilly, the Swiss rockabilly outfit Hillbilly Moon Explosion was established in Zurich by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Emanuela Hutter alongside bassist and vocalist Oliver Baroni. Their recordings feature abundant retro twang, as Hutter's refined yet mysterious vocals intertwine with guitar work that shifts between boisterous and brooding textures, while infusions of punk, lounge pop, country, and ska further color their atmospheric blend. The combo first defined its signature approach with the 2002 release Introducing the Hillbilly Moon Explosion, reached a peak of artistic assurance on the 2011 album Buy Beg or Steal, joined forces with psychobilly veteran Mark "Sparky" Phillips for 2019's The Sparky Sessions, and revealed both its energetic and seductive facets on 2024's Back in Time.

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion came together in 1998 within Zurich's rockabilly scene after Oliver Baroni departed the Hillbilly Headhunters and Emanuela Hutter concluded her tenure with MD Moon. Guitarist Pat Matteo and drummer Aad Hollander completed the initial roster. By the sessions for their debut album Introducing the Hillbilly Moon Explosion in 2002, Matteo had exited and Patrick Geser had assumed guitar duties. Following Aad Hollander's departure before 2004's Bourgeois Baby, Luke Weyermann joined on drums. American rockabilly guitarist Eddie Angel, recognized for his contributions to Los Straitjackets, supplied lead parts on 2009's All Grown Up. The 2011 album Buy Beg or Steal introduced Duncan James as the band's enduring guitarist and included the track "My Love for Evermore," a duet between Emanuela Hutter and Mark "Sparky" Phillips, frontman of the British psychobilly band Demented Are Go. Phillips later appeared on the song "Northern Crown" from 2013's Damn Right Honey! (Songs of Love & Loss, Life & Death). In 2015 the group issued the full-length collaboration French Kiss with French actress and vocalist Arielle Dombasle. With Monsters and Gods arrived in 2016, again featuring Phillips on a rendition of the Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash duet "Jackson," at which point Sylvain Petite had replaced Luke Weyermann on drums. The 2019 project The Sparky Sessions reunited Mark "Sparky" Phillips with the Hillbilly Moon Explosion across an entire album. The band supported retro-country artist Dale Watson on a version of Buck Owens' "Act Naturally" for his 2022 release Jukebox Fury. Cleopatra Records handled U.S. distribution for the 2024 album Back in Time and also arranged American releases for the combo's initial three albums.
