Biography
In the early 1970s the Independents stood out among mixed-gender vocal ensembles by issuing several exceptional singles. The lineup of Chuck Jackson, Maurice Jackson, Helen Curry, and Eric Thomas focused on melodramatic, emotionally heightened love songs that were executed with precision. Their Wand debut “Just as Long as You Need Me” arrived in 1972 and climbed to number eight on the R&B charts, establishing their presence. The following year they reached the top of those same charts with “Leaving Me,” while “Baby I’ve Been Missing You” peaked at number four. Although the quartet never secured significant pop crossover, devotees of soul music embraced the narrative depth of their lyrics and the interplay among the voices. “Let This Be a Lesson to You” became their final hit in 1974, another single that entered the R&B Top Ten. Afterward Jackson and Yancy built a successful career as a production and songwriting duo, crafting hits for Ronnie Dyson and Natalie Cole.
