In 2021, five musicians based in London came together to form what would become the Last Dinner Party, consisting of Abigail Morris on vocals, Lizzie Mayland handling vocals and guitar, Emily Roberts on lead guitar along with mandolin and flute, Georgia Davies on bass, and Aurora Nishevci contributing keys and vocals. Initially going by the Dinner Party, they switched to their present name in 2022. Their sound merges opulent maximalist pop elements with intricately hooked baroque indie rock, resulting in ambitious contemporary arena songs reminiscent of the sophisticated art-pop approaches seen in Sparks, Kate Bush, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Quickly emerging as one of the most talked-about groups in London's performance scene, they secured a support slot with the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park prior to issuing any recordings. Signing with Island Records paved the way for their 2023 single "Nothing Matters," a powerful, audacious, and grand track that fulfilled expectations through extensive streaming numbers and paved the path toward their first album, Prelude to Ecstasy, released in 2024.
